I mentioned a few days ago that I did not allow myself to use either the tilt or shift features of my new lens for the first 30-40 minutes of shooting. Then I made myself use the important but less enticing shift feature, whose effects are necessary but often not discernable unless you point them out. Finally I allowed myself to play with the tilt feature. This is the second shot on which I used it. The first shot made more sense, although the building itself that I was shooting is kind of boring. Then I turned around, I think in the same spot, and focused on the Lever House, which is growing on me.
And I have to admit, my tilt-shift composition thought process went like this: “What happens if I tilt it to the left? Oooh. What if I tilt it to the right? Aaaah. Does any of this make sense with the rest of the image’s composition? Who cares! It’s tilt-shift!!! Woohoo!!”
So, I pledge to attempt to use more judgment in the future, and I even have shots from this same outing I am more proud of, but I’m putting this out there because I had fun taking it, and I think it turned out OK, despite my lack of control when setting it up.

14 Oct 2010Nice work, Mark! I’ve got a rental of the Canon 17mm tilt/shift coming this week, and I guarantee I’ll be doing the exact same thing! Can’t wait!
