Work the Hat

or the hat will work you.

Earlier this week Jason Martini posted this image on Flickr and tweeted that “Chicago has the most wide brimmed hats per square block of any city!”  I can’t argue the point, as I must admit that NYC has a shortage.  While there are a smattering of fedoras, plus the occasional sprinkling of wool caps and Kangols, the city has pretty much gone over to ball cap culture. I’m even guilty myself, as I own a styling fedora that doesn’t find the top of my head that often as much as it used to, a victim of casual business attire.

Still, I knew if I went looking I would find some choice examples, and this gentleman crossed my path right on schedule.

  1. Love this shot Mark, and really digging that you chose color for it. The tones are awesome.

What’s funny on a side note is the big “Love” thing in the background. There is one here in Scottsdale that I used to photograph a family just the other day!

    1. Thanks Mike. I don’t know why the love sculpture is there, or even how long it’s been there. My sense is it’s only a few years old but I could be completely off base, even though I’ve worked a few blocks away for 15 years. Funny that. Lots of tourists take pictures on front of it, but my use here was of course just good fortune. As for the color, while the Bus Stop & Crosswalk series are 100% BW, for my other street shots I use whatever I think is best. Finally, I’m glad you like the tones, they’re straight from the Kodak Portra NC setting in the film effects filter on Nik.

  2. I just found it interesting that it’s not unique to Scottsdale…that it’s obviously a piece of art that is duplicated and placed around the world possibly.

  3. And now, my specialty: more than anyone wants to know.
The Love Sculpture was made by American artist Robert Indiana. It was originally designed as a card for the Museum of Modern Art in 1964, and made into a stamp in 1973.
