iPhone Hipstamatic Subway Candids – Summer 2010

Starting last summer, I have been taking regular candid snapshots of people I see riding on the subway (and sometimes bus) on my daily commute.  I use the Hipstamatic App, and usually shake the phone before shooting, which randomly selects a combination of software “film” and software “lens” to create different looks for each shot.  I’ve decided to publish them quarterly, on a half-year delay.  So here, on this day of yet more snow in NYC, is a glimpse of last summer.  Click on any thumbnail to view in a lightbox, and click on the left or right edge of any lightbox image to move to the next or previous image.

  2. I really like these ones Mark!
Candids are the best IMO because they’re not posing at all, they’re showing their true selves.
My fav one is the second from left to right on the second row.
    Thanks for sharing subway life.

  3. Mark these are outstanding. Love the whole series of shots.

  4. What a varied cast of characters! Really cool idea, Mark.
BTW, has anyone ever “caught” you taking a photo of them?

  5. For all the subway riding I do, I’m waiting for the day I show up in one of these shots.

  6. Thanks for the comments all. This has been a heavy traffic day, comparatively, for my site.
Preeti, I’ve been lucky, and I have some tricks to avoid detection. I think a couple of times people other than the subjects noticed, wrinkled their noses, but didn’t say anything. I think only once has the person I took a picture of noticed, and he scowled but didn’t do anything else. His picture should be in my Fall 2010 set which will come out in about 3 months.
