Paradox: 48 Laws of Power

Now you know how many laws of power there are.

This is the first image I shot during Saturday’s photo outing with Jesse Pafundi and Scott Wyden Kivowitz.  As I mentioned yesterday, we were creatively lost and could find nothing to shoot. While retracing our steps, we walked past an entrance for buses into the Port Authority Bus Terminal indoor garage, and amazingly there was no security, and not even any signs telling people to keep out.  Nevertheless, we all figured any time spent inside would have to be quick, and I started to think that 1 guy with a tripod might go unnoticed, 2 was pushing it, and 3 was not the magic number. So I walked back to the sidewalk outside and found this. I’m not sure what it is, except apparently it is some sort of circuit box. It was fun to shoot the brackets and look at the curious faces of people walking by.

In Scott’s post yesterday, linked above, he advised photographers to turn around, noting that while the 3 of us were focused on a church, he turned around and saw a cool piece of construction equipment to shoot. My lesson for today just expands on that a bit. Turn around, walk outside, back inside, turn the corner. There is something worth shooting nearby, even if thousands of people walk by every hour and would never think to look twice at your subject. Find it. Make it yours. The less obvious it is the more likely nobody has done it previously.

    1. You are correct, Mark – a Focal Point special all the way.
