Time and bell have buried the day, the black cloud carries the sun away – [St. Aloysius Cemetery, Livingston Manor, NY]

This is a small cemetery that appears to be affiliated with St. Aloysius parish, in Livingston Manor, NY, which I came across last summer. I had driven up through Rockland and Sullivan Counties to photograph some abandoned diners, and on my way back I spent a short time exploring, where I found some covered bridges and a few other scenes like this.

This looks a bit like infrared, but it is not. In fact, it is not even an infrared filter. I did add a red filter to my black and white conversion in Silver Efex Pro, and that is what accounts for the dark sky. There is also a touch of digital blue toner in there, as well.

  1. Love the angle of view, makes for a strong composition. Great in mono too. I perhaps would have gotten slightly lower still and got the bottom of the stone in on the lower left. I think that extra couple of inches would make a even more dynamic viewpoint.

    1. Thanks all for the comments, and especially to Dave for a fair criticism. For whatever reason I didn’t even think of base as part of the stone and so cut it off without any due consideration.

  2. Nice image. The b&w really gives it the feel of an old time movie.

  3. You’ve effectively led our eye to the wispy clouds and the barn in the distance. Powerful, unique perspective. Love the hint of blue-graphite.

  5. Great framing and composition on this one Mark, I love it! I too shoot some cemeteries sometimes, there’s something very melancholic about them. Great subject and fantastic photo today!
