Like A Hurricane

To me every chain link fence is a Hurricane fence, although in truth not all of them are made by that manufacturer. So that covers the title, but here’s what I really want to talk about:

Yesterday I acted as Leader for a Queens edition of the Scott Kelby World Wide Photo Walk. Because I was covering ground I have covered many times before, and had some responsibilities as walk leader that would require my attention, I decided in advance that I wouldn’t worry too much about grabbing every possible shots, but I still wanted to get some. I took 2 cameras: my Nikon D700 for the group photo at the start of the walk, and my Fuji x100 for everything else. As I wasn’t focused on getting pictures, I didn’t sweat my pre-walk preparation, and gave more attention to making sure I had everything I needed as walk leader – such as copies of the map, and I also was more concerned about the gear I needed for the group photo than for the walk in general.

Of course, that meant that when I was ready to take some images I discovered I had no SD card in my camera and had forgotten to pack one (the Nikon used for the group photo uses CF cards and I had that covered).  I searched my bag and vest figuring I must have a card stuck in a pocket somewhere, found one, and put it in the camera. Then I just flipped the camera over and without any concern for where I was pointing it, took this picture. I love the lines, focus and perspective, but also had some technical issues to deal with. The camera was set to Exposure 2+, and was shooting JPEG, not Raw. The second issue made it harder to correct the first.

As a result, the image either had to stay washed out or gain some odd color tones as I fixed the exposure. This is the result, which I kind of love, and it was absolutely a happy accident. The walk seems to have been a success and most everyone, if not in fact everyone, had a great time, or was nice enough to lie and tell me they had a great time ;).  If you have a chance to participate in one next year, I recommend it.
