I’ve put up numerous images of closed diners on Route 17, but none of functioning Diners. There a a few my family have frequented over the years, but none of them make great photographs, or at least they don’t inspire me.

But driving home last Thanksgiving weekend I did get some shots of three signs from two of our favorite diners. We love, just love, the Roscoe Diner. One of its best attributes, for us, is of course location. It happens to be perfectly placed so it is a convenient stop both for trips upstate to Syracuse, and also on the way home, depending on when we leave. Beyond that it’s just really good diner food. Few things really stand out on the menu, it’s just that it’s all good. One tip: this is not stated on the menu, but you can get your French toast deep fried.

At some point the Roscoe stopped using the sign in the middle for some reason and replaced it with the first sign up above that’s three miles further from its location. Last summer when I dove up to take all the shots of the closed diners I linked to above, I tried unsuccessfully to find a spot where I could pull over safely and get a close-up shot of the abandoned sign. I was glad to be able to get a decent shot of it while my wife drove us home.

The QuickWay Diner is another favorite of ours, mostly because of the TEEK and VEE characters. They are have built quite the entrepreneurial empire, with the diner, a used car lot, a horse farm, and an alternative furnace and fuel business.
