I tried to make it easy on myself last night. Black and white conversions are usually easy, even though I do not just hit the “make black and white” button and then publish the image as is. I play with tones and color filters, but rarely do I find myself floudering. I usually know how to tweak and get a result I want in short order.
But last night I tried doing so on 4 or 5 images, good candidates for black and white treatment, and never got a result I liked. Eventually I opened this image, adjusted one slider, and this happened. An all black sky what I originally envisioned, and part of me still thinks it is overdone, but there’s no denying it is a bit striking.
This is Blackwell Lighthouse on the northern tip of Roosevelt Island, previously featured in an HDR collaboration here.

8 Jun 2012Striking for sure! Love the totally blacked out sky – very dramatic! I remember this guy from the collab – knew it when I saw the title!

8 Jun 2012Like this one very much, Mark. Especially the tone. Not too much highlight but just enough to give depth. And that shadow of a lurking, robed figure with a cane makes it perfect!
