Tower Entrance

Have you ever wondered if there is a way to enter the towers of the Golden Gate Bridge? I did, and here is the answer. Now I have no idea if you can climb up once inside, or whether this is the door to little more than a glorified closet.

I processed this using methods very similar to this post focusing on another bridge detail.  Is it a creative rut, or am I developing a style? You decide.

  1. I’ll bet there is a stair or something that can take you to the top. The Mackinac Bridge in northern Michigan has similar construction and there are elevators that take bridge workers to the top so they can do things like change the lightbulbs and do other maintenance. My guess is it is a very tight space.

Nice shot, BTW. I really like the vivid color. You weren’t hassled trying to take a picture of important infrastructure?

    1. Thanks James, and thank goodness, no hassles. Actually the bridge walkway is populated entirely by people with cameras, taking countless pictures. I presume the city has decided that the tourism advantage outweighs the hard to quantify and possibly non-existent anti-terrorism advantage. Of course, as far as I noticed, I was the only one taking pictures of this door, some scaffolding, the metal covers that occasionally populated the walkway, and other similar features. Also, for what it’s worth, I wasn’t using even a mini-tripod or monopod, and my camera was the Olympus E-PL1 micro 4/3s, so my kit drew no attention to me.

  2. I am sure that the Golden Gate Bridge authority, like Disney and the city of Las Vegas all realize that the benefit of allowing the public to photograph freely, significantly outweighs the minuscule risk that cameras in the hands of the public pose. I also imagine that when ever any motor vehicle “breaks down” on the bridge, the Highway Patrol is :Johnnie-on-the-spot”, as rationally they should be.

If only the goons in the public and private sectors at other venues were so enlightened.

  3. Mark, I’m sure a small camera helps. For some reason our security people seem to ignore the fact that small cameras can take high resolution images and if someone were to be casing the place with photography (and that has *never* been shown to be the case, except in movies) they likely wouldn’t be using large cameras with tripods!

Anyway, I’m glad you weren’t hassled. I need to get out to SF sometime, been a long time since I’ve been out that way.

  4. *raises hand* I think I’m gonna vote for style, myself, here Mark. LOVE this shot, my friend. I.. just.. want.. to.. reach.. in.. this.. picture.. and open that door!
