God Save The World

NOTE: I wrote a more personal 9/11 remembrance focusing on the World Trade Center here in May, which was occasioned by this. Today’s post is based on photos I took two days ago downtown in anticipation of the anniversary. Please follow the link to read that if you are at all interested.

I didn’t pick a particular ribbon to focus on in this picture. I didn’t even read what was written on it until I emptied the SD card on to my computer, but I am happy with the happy accident that I caught this one upon which someone wrote “God Save The World.” I have to admit I’m not especially pleased with some of the choices made for the 9/11 remembrance this year or the soon to be unveiled memorial site. I was tempted to list everything I thought was wrong* until this helped to remind me that I should save that for those who care to listen to me complain (which is probably a very select group). The ribbons are affixed to the fence of St. Paul’s Chapel on Broadway in lower Manhattan. The Twin Towers once stood directly behind the chapel.

This gentleman is not adding his own ribbon to the set, but stopped to re-affix one that he noticed had fallen to the ground.

People also hung ribbons from the branches of a tree in the St. Paul Churchyard.

After many delays, they have finally made substantial progress on the Freedom Tower replacement for the Twin Towers.

I woke up this morning and it is a beautiful day, just like it was 10 years ago.**

* I will say this, which is not so much of a complaint but an idea: I think we need a statute of the heroes of Flight 93 in action.  We need to commemorate what they did and not just their death.

** My final note is that it now seems odd that I have no pictures from that day, although I never would have thought so at the time. Ten years ago digital cameras were in their infancy and ubiquitous camera phones non-existent.
