Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree 2011

Sometimes I feel foolish all the times I admit that I notice a photographic element only when I review the image at home, and had no sense of it when composing in the field. This is another example. I carefully composed to get the tree in the image, obviously, but also I specifically remember that I crouched down and angled up to get the entirety of 30 Rockefeller Center in there behind it. It was only this morning that I noticed the trumpet looming in the foreground and perfectly intersecting with the building.

But here is why I find it interesting, and don’t feel so foolish. At some level, unconsciously, I must have noticed, because the horn perfectly intersects the building, which would not have happened had I not simply lined up in perfect center. had I done that, both the left trumpet and right trumpet would act as bookends on either side of the building. If I paid no attention to being centered, then the odds of having the trumpet placed just so are minimal. That I moved a bit to the left and placed the trumpet exactly as it is indicates that I did so intentionally, even though I did not realize it and do not remember it.

Continued Merry Christmas and best wishes for 2012 everyone.

  3. This is a great shot Mark. I love it and the first thing I noticed was how perfectly the trumpet intersected with the tree. Funny I have that happen to me all the time, sometimes on a conscious level I’m oblivious to an element in my shot until I get home and see it on the computer. In any case this is one of my favorites of yours. Happy New Year.
