Everything Passes

According to the mural, “Mom” passed in 2009, and my web research indicates that the “M&M Variety Hardware” store closed sometime between fall 2010 and fall 2011. The “In Memory of Mom” moral on the roll down gate was done by local muralist Chico, who also does a rotating series of murals on the wall around the corner. Mom was the liquor store owner, and the store is now in the hands of her nephew. This is Avenue B on the Lower East Side, corner of Houston.

UPDATE: I almost forgot. Please go visit Scott Frederick’s blog for the latest installment of our HDR collaboration group, with an amazing image of  a closed movie theatre projection room. It’s already a favorite of many people, including me.

  2. Man, I love the processing on this. Nice vibrant colors and great lines and detail. Nice one, Mark!

  3. I love that shot. There’s something wherever I look in this image. But one tiny thought – I would trim off the left edge to get rid of the bare sky. Those windows are awesome.

    1. Hey LensScaper, don’t think I didn’t consider cropping that sky out. But editing this photo entailed that dealing with the trade-offs between straightening, lens correction, and losing photographic real estate. In the end, removing the sky would have meant losing a bit too much of the Liquor Store’s left edge.

  4. Nice work sir. Love those old brick buildings.

  5. Very cool location, nice work with the composition and processing.

  6. I agree with you on leaving in the sky. My first thought would have been to crop it out, but you would have lost some of the important detail in the Liquor store.

  7. Nice color and detail punch, Mark.

  8. Looks like a nice place.. I guess I already saw this in one of some other sites.. Or maybe it was just almost the same but not totally.. Great shot still!
