Our Lady Of Charity of El Cobre

This is a statue of Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre, or  La Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, located in St. Mary’s Church in Yonkers, NY, also known as the Church of the Immaculate Conception, and the subject of numerous previous photos on this blog.

A fair account of the story behind this vision or Our Lady can be found at Wikipedia. In short, 3 men were lost in a storm at sea off Cuba, and prayed for Mary to intercede on their behalf. The storm suddenly cleared, and they found a statue of her floating on the water.  She was declared patroness of Cuba in 1916 by Pope Benedict XV (not the current Benedict).
