Green-Wood Cemetery – Claire’s Gallery

Something a little different today. I’m letting my daughter Claire take over the post with her images (although she doesn’t even know it). She’s 9, and likes to tag along on my photowalks sometimes. She came with me to Green-Wood cemetery a couple of weeks ago, using her little Kodak point and shoot. So there are clearly visible technical limitations on these shots, and the only editing done to them is in iPhoto, usually just hitting the “Enhance” button which adds a small bit of saturation and sharpness, and I also straightened the horizon a bit  on some of them.

I’ve split my selection of her images into two parts. This one is more architectural. The second which I will probably post on Thursday is more about statues and details.

The first image is a beautiful flower shop that closed in 2012, but was bought by the cemetery trust and is due to be restored. Claire took this from the car during our approach to the cemetery.

The second image is a detail of an Arch set into a hill near the main chapel.

Next is a low perspective shot of the stairs leading up to Battle Hill, where many war memorials are found, and where part of the Revolutionary War’s Battle of Brooklyn was fought.

Next is Caire’s shot of the same James Gould mortuary featured in my shot here. As I took the shot I explained to Claire why I was doing so and how I composed it (mostly to get the mortuary together with the red tree to the right). She took a similar shot but also noticed this tree in the foreground and created her own different composition.

Finally a mortuary that is sadly in a state of disrepair. When we noticed it Claire said “Ooh, that looks cool.”

  1. I like her eye for subjects! The second shot is pretty cool and the angle of the stairs is good! I’m impressed!

  2. Wow Claire! You are a chip off the old block. Looks like there a couple great photographers in the family. Nice work, your framing, subject selection and compositions are all indications of the creativity inside you. Keep it up, you are a great photographer!

  3. I was looking on your photo blog and just saw these now. Great job, Claire! I especially like the one of the stairs.
