Two treatments of the same image. It’s not something I do often, but I made one of them last night ( I won’t say which) and in the early morning I has second thoughts and made the alternate. Then when it came time to post, I had third thoughts, and couldn’t decide. So here they both are. If you have a preference, let me know.
Still, I’m just happy that I’m even at all pleased with the image. This comes from an afternoon excursion I made a few weeks ago on the weekend to Poughkeepsie, NY, hoping to capture some fall colors as you see here. If you follow this blog with any regularity you might have noticed that I have been more interested in that subject than I have in any prior year. But I was extremely disappointed with my results that day, mostly due to terrible sky and weather conditions. When I left, the weather both at home and in Poughkeepsie was clear with some clouds, close to ideal for photography. But by the time I got there some unpredicted cloud cover rolled in, bathing everything in a dull grey light. A bit of software manipulation managed to salvage this image, and brought out the mildly blue sky hiding up there.
Finally, the bridge in the background is an old railway bridge converted to a state park, the Walkway Over the Hudson, and now carries only pedestrians. I went up there and by that time the photographic atmosphere was even worse, although I still enjoyed the view while there. It’s worth a visit if you ever find yourself up in the Duchess County area.

14 Nov 2013I prefer the processing on the top image, though I can’t see fault with either. Sometimes it’s a matter of personal preference. We can never match the dynamic range or ability to see perfect color temperature of the human eye. We can only hope to get an image as close to what we saw and felt, (yes, felt) at that moment in time.
