This was originally built as a large Dry Goods Department Store. The domes were part of the original structure, but were demolished along the way. These are reconstructions, added back when the building was recently converted to condominiums with ground floor retail.
This is also my first “___rama.” I haven’t done any panoramas or vertoramas. I’ve tried a few times but I never put in the necessary care in the field, and software couldn’t correct my flawed inputs to my satisfaction. This one finally worked pretty well. I used the Shift feature of a tilt shift lens to slide the image plane vertically and capture both the top and bottom of the building, which the lens could not do in a single image. I shot a 7-exposure bracket set of each half. Then I processed the brackets separately, but used the exact same setting in Photomatix for the output. Photoshop then merged the images. The only flaw is that he process did manage to distort the top of the building somewhat, so I could not line it up perfectly with any of the original unprocessed shots. That made it impossible to use the sky from one of the original images to eliminate the halos around the building top. I did what I oculd to minimize them but they are still there.
Thinking about it now, I realize I might have tried merging the original image with the best sky with one of the bottom images and hope the algorithm created the same exact distortion. If so, it sould line up perfectly with the HDR version and that problem would be solved.
I’ll definitely try that on the next image, and maybe someday go back to try it on this one as well.
