Analog Efex Pro Test Run – Eastern State Penitentiary

This week Google rolled out an update to the Nik Software suite, including a completely new module – Analof Efex Pro. I’ve barely scratched the surface of its capabilities, but it allows you to recreate a multitude of traditional film photography effects that goes way beyond most existing film effects, which simply try to mimic film types, such as Kodachrome or Fuji Velvia.  You can create effects based upon 19th century wet plate collodion photography, which I used here, as well as more recent classic cameras, toy cameras and more, as well as a variety of film types.

For this photo, I applied a preset recipe with one minimal tweak, but the module allows you a substantial amount of control. My buddy Justin already has a brief tutorial up showing how to take advantage of the various control features. You can get more info about Analog Efex here and the entire Nik collection here. Both pages have a button on the top right allowing you to buy the entire set for $149, and that’s not an affiliate link from me. I just like the program. Also, I should note that this update, including the completely new component, was pushed out for free to all existing Nik Suite owners.

  1. Nice work – been playing with it myself and am enjoying it!

  2. Thanks for linking it up, glad you enjoyed the tutorial. It’s a fun tool!

    1. Thanks, Toad. The entire Nik set is great, and at $149 US for the set, I think it’s a great deal. I paid about 3-4 times that amount a few years ago before they were acquired by Google.
