So I guess I can get a short depth of field and decent bokeh with the E-PL1 and the 20mm f1.7 pancake lens.  I’m not sure why it works better in some shots than others, however.  I think it helped that I got pretty close to this gentleman, but I’ve had other shots taken at equal distance and same aperture that don’t seem to create the same result.  My biggest obstacle now is the season – night comes way too late to get the night time look I want when I leave work.  I’m still publishing images from a few months ago and haven’t dipped too deeply into the more recent shots.  Still, I’m heartened by this.  If I can figure out how to get results like this with the E-Pl1 kit, I’ll be very pleased.

  1. Mark, did you shoot in mono or convert in post? This is a nice shot!

  2. Hi Jamie. I shot raw and added the B&W and vignette in post. As I get to know the E-PL1 a little better, I might start shooting in B&W at least occasionally, but the Raw still gives me the most flexibility.
