West on 22nd Street

This shot was a throwaway.  I was heading south from Madison Square to try to capture some side street character when it started to rain.  I decided to stop venturing further away from where I was parked, but set up for this shot on the corner with an impromptu rain cover over my camera.  I also treated the processing almost as a throwaway – no filters beyond simple HDR through Photomatix, and I did not spend the time to fix the blown-out highlights left after Photomatix did its thing.  I kind of like the result, a somewhat rough look, with the big water drops.  I also like the way the light trails seem to hop on the left side of the image (you need to look close).  I don’t know what caused that.

  1. I love this photo! Could I have permission to use this on my website? It is not for profit, non-commercial. I am a leader in a church ministry called “Crossings” and I have been looking for some photography that we could use as a banner for our webpage. All the photography I have considered for this use (my own included) comes nowhere close to the quality of your crossings photos. Please let me know if you are willing to allow us to use this or some other photos.

    1. Mark O.,
All of my images — unless specifically stated otherwise — are available for personal or non-commercial digital use (e.g. screensaver, wallpaper, web use) for free, as long as you give me credit and a link back to my website in a reasonable manner on each page where you use them. So, yes, feel free to use them in your ministry. I would love to see your site once you add them, so please send me a link. Also, please respond to this just so I know you got this message.

  2. Awesome! At the moment our web presence consists of little more than a Facebook fan page. Eventually we may have some stuff up on the main page of our church website. For now though I would like to use this photo as our profile banner, cropped at street level. I think that would look simply incredible. I will put your name and web link in the photo description, as well as tag your Facebook profile in a post telling people about your photography. Sound good? Thanks again! You have some serious talent 🙂

Below is the link to our page, but I will try to connect with you through facebook as well.
