The weather was pretty dismal during my family’s recent weekend stay at Mohonk Mountain House. It wasn’t bad enough, fortunately, to interfere completely with all of our planned activities, but it was continually foggy and overcast with occasional rain. This just killed most of my planned photo opportunities. Yes sometimes fog can add mood and drama, but is also obscures anything you might want to feature. Multiple times I would see something while on a hike, and by the time I lifted my camera to my eye, mere seconds, it would become invisible due to a strengthening or moving fog.
On this particular afternoon, there was just enough of a break that you could just see the mountains in the distance through multiple layers of passing clouds. I took this from the hotel’s front porch. The item in the foreground helps you pick out particular items of interest, which I presume is useful on a clear day. On this day, it served as a convenient foreground focal point for my image.

10 Aug 2012Too bad the weather wasn’t more cooperative, Mark. But you certainly managed a very nice landscape shot here. That’s and interesting instrument for locating points of interest. Pretty cool!

13 Aug 2012Well, despite the weather you got a good shot, Mark. The ‘pointer’ leads us neatly to the far horizon where there is a view – for a brief while. Well composed, patience paid off.
