On A Clear Day, You Can See Jersey

Amsterdam Avenue, Tenth Avenue, New Jersey
Yesterday I went back to my alma mater, Columbia University, to shoot the campus. This is clearly not the campus, bit it is a view afforded to my by the campus. The main campus sits between Broadway and Amsterdam and between 114th Street and 120th Street. The Law School, the School of International and Public Affairs, as well as some dormitories sit on the other side of Amsterdam Avenue, connected to the main campus by an elevated plaza that goes over Amsterdam between 116th and 117th streets.

This was taken looking straight down Amsterdam Avenue, whose name changes to Tenth Avenue at 59th Street. I believe this is one of the best views of NYC’s urban canyons available. It is hard to tell at this resolution, but you can see the High Line, then the endpoint of Tenth Avenue, and beyond that New Jersey, about 5-6 miles away.

This was taken handheld with a Fuji X-E1 and the 55-200mm lens, and it is a JPG straight out of camera, with just a slight horizon tilt fix.

  1. Great shot Mark but why would you want to see NJ? I can say that since I spent 35 years there.
